Doris Carter Obituary

DORIS MARIE HARRIS-CARTER, a loving woman of God who family, friends and community entreated as "Mommy", transitioned to new life on March 29, 2018 at the blessed age of 83 years old.  Doris had accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at a young age and continue her walk of faith her home going.

Doris was born on January 21, 1935 in West Mississippi, the only daughter of the late Robert Harris and the late Rosetta (Isaac) Harris who died in childbirth.  Doris's paternal grandparents, the late Samuel and Mary Ella Harris, helped Robert to raise her. Doris' circle of love grew with the later addition on her father's four other children.

The Harris family relocated to Lakeshore, New York and later made their home in Lackawanna , New York where Doris was a student in the Lackawanna Public School System.  While Lackawanna, Doris met and married Mr. Napoleon Carter who was originally from Fort Valley, Georgia.  Together Doris and Napoleon were blessed with ten children.  Not only was Doris "Mommy" to her own burgeoning clan, but she also gave herself, her family, her time, her talent and her financial support to her church and her community.

In 1978, Doris and her family moved to Buffalo, New York where she joined  fellowship with First Timothy Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Kenneth Wilkerson.  Doris' demeanor was always that of a decent, respectable and godly woman.  Her brother Kasseen even proclaimed, "I never heard her say a swearing word!"  Doris taught her children by example to put God first in all their affairs and to give  service to others, the church and the community.  After a career of over twenty years with the Erie County Sheriff's Department, Doris retired as Supervisor of Janitorial Services in 1996.

"Mommy", Doris contended  for the faith even as she encountered devastating illness in 2013.  She fought with all her heart and never gave up.  Her husband Napoleon had preceded her in passing in 2004. Other loved ones who had gone on before her were her children Samuel, Alan and William and her siblings Moses Harris of Chicago, IL and Denivette Harris.  Her precious memory lives on in the hearts of her children Nathaniel, Frankie, Wendy, Carl, Susan Carter-Miller (William), Carol Carter-Gilbert and Lisa Carter; daughter-in-law Tonia (the late Samuel Carter); her brother Kasseen Harris of Buffalo, New York and her sister Erainia Harris of Lackawanna, New York, and a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, great great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, other beloved family members and friends.

Family will receive friends Wednesday, April 4, 2018, 11am at First Timothy Baptist Church, 1467 Genesee St. Funeral to follow at 12 noon. Interment at St. Matthew's Cemetery.
