Larry Jelks Obituary

LARRY D. JELKS was born in Rome, GA on July 17, 1955 to the late Marvin Melvin Jelks and Mary Louise Ivery-Jelks.  The family moved to Buffalo, New York in 1956 and moved to Urban Street in 1966 where close life-time friendships was made in this black working class neighborhood.  Larry accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Logan Memorial AME Zion Church.  He attended Emerson High School and later obtained his (GED) General Education Development Certificate.  He met and married Terasa Goggins, of this union they had one child Darnell.  His second marriage to Debra Cardwell, of this union they had two children Renee and Jamila.  He was a member of St. Mark AME church of Lackawanna, New York.

Larry joined the military and was honorably discharged.  He held several jobs over the years: Bethlehem Steel, Mod Pac in printing, Brick layer while residing in Atlanta, GA.  Returning to Buffalo, New York, Larry resolved to face his struggles and renewed his relationship with God.  God gave him the victory!  He was employed at Roswell Park Hospital where he recently.

Larry knew no strangers, and anyone who ever came in contract with him could attest to that.  He presence will truly be missed.  He leaves to cherish his memories one son and two daughters Darnell (Kassi) Jelks of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Renee D. (James) Ingram and Jamila Z. Jelks, both of Buffalo, NY.  His grandchildren Jordan, Jenna, and Joey of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and James of Buffalo, NY.  He is preceded in death by his brother.  He also leaves to cherish his memories is his Mother Mary Ivery and his sister Rev. Sharon Baugh.  A special friend Carson Scales of Buffalo, New York and a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

Family will receive friends Friday 11 am at St. Luke AME Zion Church, 314 E Ferry St. Funeral to follow at 12 pm.
