WALTER R. MATTHIS "COKEY," was born April 4, 1950 in Buffalo, NY to the late Dorothy Matthis and Johnnie Matthis.
Walter was educated in the Buffalo Public School System at #74 and Woodlawn Junior High and McKinley High School. After graduation, he enlisted into the United States Army for four years. He received his honorable discharge and returned to Buffalo, where he worked at Allied Chemical Plant. Over the years, other employment included: Sanders Roofing Company, The Board of Education and Veteran's Administration (VA). In 1980, he married the former Rosemary Porter.
Cokey is preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Johnnie Matthis; brother, James Matthis and sister, Leah Matthis.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Rose Mary Matthis; daughters, Chantell, Jennifer, Andrea and Shawna Matthis; stepdaughter, Bernice Bell and one sister, Esther Matthis. He also leaves Jamarion, Calin, Camden, Chloe, Kalei, Jamarrious, Destiny, Kylen, Ledarrius, Jr, Justin, Vantavious, Vaniti, Jahiem, Jermaine, Jermiah, Raymond Jr, RaShawn, Daishania, Alexis, Racheal, Jasmine, Erykah, Ordreja, Octavia, Onrya, Andreanna and a host of other loving family and friends.
Services will be held Friday, April 20, 2018, 11am at Agape AME Church, 224 Northland Ave. Funeral to follow at 12 noon. Interment held at Forest Lawn Cemetery.
