REMEMBERING THE LIFE OF
Dorothy Jean Hunter
1962 ~ 2024
Dorothy Hunter was born on March 17, 1962, in Cleveland, MS, as one of three children to the late James Earl Hunter and Elma Hunter. She departed this life on October 11, 2024. Throughout her life and until her final moments, Dorothy remained a model of kindness, compassion, and deep love for her family and friends. She was always grateful for the long, fulfilling life she lived, enriched by a variety of wonderful experiences.
Dorothy Hunter accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior as a member of the Community Church of God in Christ in Furnham, NY under the pastorate of the late Bishop Quitmon J. Ross. After moving to Buffalo, NY in the late 1970's, Dorothy entered the workforce at the Postal Office. She would often assist with the lunch program at Community Church and was known for tough love on May Street as the neighborhood Mom. Dorothy Hunter gave countless hours of service to the community and often was known to be a professional Bingo player. Dorothy's life can be summed up by the three "F's": Family, Friends, and Fun. In her nearly 62 years, she experienced each in abundance. Her strength shone brightly, especially in the courage she displayed during her final stages of care.
Dorothy was a woman of faith who deeply valued her relationships, nurturing them throughout each stage of her life. At the time of her passing, she still cherished friendships from every neighborhood she lived in, connections with the parents of her children's friends, and various other associations. Her friendships spanned all aspects of life, each holding a special place in her heart. Whether it was through phone conversations, family outings, shared meals, or providing support during difficult times, Dorothy was not only known for enjoying her friendships but for being a loyal and thoughtful friend. She understood that, like a garden, friendships require care and effort, and she was always willing to put in the work to enjoy their lasting rewards.
Those who shared the joy of her life are left to cherish her memory which include sons, Anthony Hicks and James Byrd; a number of grandchildren; brother, Johnnie Hunter as well as a host of nephews, nieces, other relatives, and loving friends.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Serita Robinson; parents; and brother, Robert Hunter.
