Jesse Cornell Charles: A Life Dedicated to God, Family, and Joy

Jesse Cornell Charles, affectionately known as "Carnell" to his loved ones, was a man whose life embodied the virtues of faith, steadfast bonds of family and friends, and an infectious zest for living. Born on August 16, 1950, in Wilmington, Delaware to Marie Ellen Land. Carnell, the eldest of eight children reminding his mother he was the "Number One Son", brought a guiding light to his younger siblings from a young age.

As a youth, Carnell's spiritual journey began when he started attending a neighborhood church, igniting a passion for the word of God. Under the guidance of the late Samuel Austin, his enthusiasm inspired other family members to join Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, where he faithfully served, sang and believed in church as well as the Eagle Scouts.

Carnell's dedication extended beyond the church walls. He served our nation in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, stationed in Alaska, where he would later call home for over two decades. Utilizing his mechanical drawing skills, he worked as an apprentice and journeyman on the Alyeska Pipeline, contributing to a remarkable engineering feat until its completion.

Though miles away from his Buffalo, New York roots, Carnell returned in 2019. He rejoined his childhood church, Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Rev. Frank Bostic, to continue his life's work of spreading the gospel and serving others.

Carnell's passions extended far beyond his spiritual and professional endeavors. He was an enthusiastic baker, delighting family and friends with his famous sweet potato pies, decadent triple chocolate cakes, and mouthwatering brownies. An avid sports fan, he cheered passionately for the Buffalo Bills, Cleveland Browns, and Pittsburgh Steelers, finding joy in the camaraderie of family, friends and fellow fans.

With a contagious smile, a warm personality, and an unparalleled gift for storytelling, Carnell left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His legacy of faith, family, and infectious laughter will forever be cherished by his son, Michael, of  Nevada; his daughter, La'Shawndra, of Alaska; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; his mother, Ellen Land; and siblings: Alfear, Joanne, Joseph, Johnny, Isaac (Kimberly), Robert, Dorla (Mikkel), and an additional brother, Lamont, along with a host of extended family and loved ones.

Though his physical presence is now gone, Carnell's spirit will continue to inspire and uplift all who were blessed to call him friend, brother, and beloved son of God. May his unwavering faith and zest for life be a shining example for generations to come.
