Marion Lucas, Jr. Obituary

MARION M. LUCAS, JR.

On Sunday, December 2, 2018, our Lord saw fit to grant peace and eternal rest to our beloved Sonny. With the grace of God, we stand in loving sympathy to his memory. We pay tribute and say, "Rest in Peace." Sonny was born on June 4, 1947 to the late Murlease and Marion Lucas, Sr.

From an early age, Sonny found his roots in the church; he confessed to Christ. He followed the faith of his mother, a believer in the Seventh Day Adventist. He had been raised to know and love the Lord. However, he often stepped our of his faith on someone, if needed.

Sonny was amazing on the basketball court and a force to be reckoned with on the football field. He was a good card player, loved movies, music, and most of all, his children. His children were his whole world. Making them happy and doing what he could for them was a priority. They didn't always like, but accepted his "Superman" advice and wisdom when it was given with or without them asking. Sonny was a proud and caring gentleman. He was tough, but a very kind person. He was truly loved by many people whose paths he may have crossed.

Sonny attended the Syracuse Public School System, from which he graduated. He later relocated to Buffalo, New York with his family in the '70s and matriculated at Erie County Technical Institute (Erie Community College).

Sonny earned his commercial license and drove for a career. He was an extraordinary driver. Sonny retired from Penske and Carrier Coach. He also had previous employment at Family Life Center (Parents Anonymous), the Joan A. Male Family Support Center as a van driver, and as a respite worker for Raggedy Ann & A Child Care Comprehension Center. He often spoke of his experiences, in which he was quite fond of while working at ColorTyme with his brother, Steven Gist. Sonny and his late brother, Melvin, owned and operated their own restaurant located in the Commodore Perry Housing Authority area. He often spoke highly of the fast food restaurant in the loved community of the Perry Projects.

Sonny's commitment and undying resolve was displayed through the care he provided his mother, "Murl," as he affectionately called her, as she entered the later years of her life. Whatever her needs were, Sonny provided them and exceeded them. Showering her with love and the true nurturing spirit of a nightingales, through God's grace, his mother lived a full life. As it is written in the scripture, "Honor thy mother and father and thine days shall be long upon the earth." To this life well-lived we say, "Job well done, Sonny."

Sonny is survived by his four children, La'Shy, Malik, Marcena and Simone; grandchildren, KayQuan, DeVann, Malik Jr, Zaire, Noelle, Ashanti, Diamond, Nevaeh, Willie Jr, Jaela, Makaela, A'moni and Jeffrey. Also cherishing his memories is a dear and special friend, Kimberly L. McCarley and a host of other loving family and friends.

Preceding Sonny in death is his parents, Murlease (Luke) Mays and Marion Lucas, Sr; and one brother, Melvin Lucas.
