Rebecca "Burks" Leonard was born on January, 10, 1926 in Oakridge, Louisiana to the
late Ed Burks and Lillie Ellis. She transitioned peacefully in her sleep from this life to
eternity on February 14, 2022, a month after her 96th birthday.
Rebecca was surely a yellow rose. The yellow rose symbolizes friendship and joy! Anyone
who received a bright rose, received beauty to behold and feelings of happiness. All
those who came into fellowship with Rebecca felt joy. Babies and children held a special
place in Rebecca's heart. She was kind, cheerful, giving, and loving.
In the summer of 1961 Rebecca married the love of her life Mr. Eugene Russell Leonard,
a US Army Soldier who served in WWII and whom preceded her in death. To this union
two beloved stepsons were given. The late Eugene Leonard Jr. and Jerry Leonard.
Rebecca accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior and consistently reflected the Father's
love among everyone. She was a spirit filled Christian. She was a long standing and
active member at New Creation Fellowship Church for over 30 years. She was taught by
her spiritual leaders Pastor Stephen J. and Minister Alice M. Andzel.
Rebecca shared a few special friends from church "The Girls," who were her sisters in
Christ and loved her dearly. These loving friends are: Ellen D. deVere, Diane Solomon,
Angie Nelson, Audrey Handsor, and Renee Wilk (Alice .1 Bell preceded her in death).
Rebecca retired from the Buffalo Board of Education Food Service Department. She
resided at the BMHA Richmond Summer apartments. She was very social and active
within the community. She liked to talk and pray. She was a member of the Sedita Prayer
& Bible Study group at the Richmond Summer apartments; along with Deb, Edward,
Armando, Ernestine, and Theresa. She enjoyed gardening, cleaning, shopping and going
to lunch with the girls. She drove up to the age of 94, taking people shopping until the
pandemic hit. The apartment complex gave Rebecca her own gardening section with a
sign named after her. Her building friends include: Harriet, Donna, Theresa, Valerie, Pat,
Richard, Lucy, and Provy. She loved to cook and was known for her fresh collard greens
