Shirley Lewis Obituary

Shirley Lynnette Lewis was born in Buffalo, Ny on January 6, 1937. She was the third child of four born to Stanley and Sophronia Sutton (ne Bea). Shirley went to Public Elementary School #6. She spent two years at Hutchison Central High School and finally graduated from Bennette High School.

Shirley married David Lewis Jr. in 1953, from their union seven children were born. Shirley worked at Sears at the candy counter. We as children felt it was the “Best Job Ever”. She later worked as an aide at the West Seneca State School for nine years until an injury led to her early retirement.

Shirley accepted Christ as her Lord & Savior. Her first church home was Triedstone Baptist Church, but her permanent and beloved church home was Bright Morningstar Baptist Church. Mother sang in the senior choir and made it a point to give all her fellow members Christmas Gifts. She loved her church family and especially her good friend Louise who always took her to service. Shirley was also a supervisor of the Buffalo Youth Chior during the 70s.

Shirley enjoyed gospel music, traveling, going to the casino, watching soap operas and procedural tv shows like Perry Mason and Blue Bloods. Her favorite though, was going to bingo with best friend Liz. They used the buddy system when winning the jackpot. In other words, whoever won split the winnings with the other. So, no matter what, everybody won.

Shirley was generous and helpful to everyone, family, and friends alike. So many people called her mother who were not her children. To know Shirley, was to love her. She sacrificed her young life to raise her children and never complained.

Shirley departed this life on February 19, 2024. She is preceded in death by her husband David Lewis Jr, her parents Stanley & Sophronia Sutton, her sister Sylvia Moye (James), her brother William Sutton (Joan), and two children David Jason Lewis III and Sylvia L. Lewis.

She leaves to mourn her passing her sister Sheila C. Brown (James-deceased), five children Shawn M. Lewis, Sophia D. Lewis, Sheldon W. Lewis (Karen-deceased), Stacy L. Lewis and Dean M. Lewis (Elana) plus two special souls she embraced as her own. Cythina D. Fleming (Teddy) and Keith Irby. Eighteen grandchildren Shawndra, Spencer, Courtney, Daniel, Tannis, Lauren, Allison, Alicia, Sheldon II, Sky, Brandon, Tahlia, Tallen, Teaghyn, Tyran and Asaheal. Twenty great grandchildren with more soon to be born. A host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
